The activity that makes me lose track of time is writing. When I open my Scrivener documents or draft my future blog posts, I enter a sort of trance. Hours pass, and I’m completely unaware. I forgot to eat and drink water. Sometimes I sit in the most uncomfortable positions to hold my laptop close to my chest. I don’t realize it until I try to move, and my bones creak. I’ve had to banish nighttime writing. I used to say, “It’s already 10 pm. I’ll just reread this chapter. It should only take 30 minutes.” Then I would hear birds and see the sun rise. I would unintentionally revise and annotate about ten chapters and write several notes in my writing journal. Nighttime writing is a dangerous game!

Over the past year, I have been able to start and stop much more easily. I heard some advice from Stephen King. In an interview, he suggested that you should stop writing when you still have ideas in your head. So now, rather than writing until I feel like I’m bashing into a wall, I feel comfortable stopping even when I have more to say. (Also, you’re my first ever comment. 🙂 I appreciate you taking the time to say something.)
