The Teller’s Last Tale
There was a village trapped in a labyrinth of ice. The people did not know where they came from, nor could they leave. Their only guides were the broken beams of a wooden vessel and an enduring black fire. On the coldest night, the fire faltered. To save it, the villagers tore a plank from the ship and fed it to the flame. The wood blazed, and in its light, visions appeared. They saw shores of green stone bathed in warm waters. Trees along the shore bowed before storms, and beneath the white sands lay gold. Desperation became tradition. The…

So far, I’ve shared Ever Becoming, The Genesis of Dust, and The Sage of Shadows. I wrote each of them in 24 hours, and I loved pushing myself. Writing this kind of flash fiction has felt cathartic. It was a challenge to come up with a concept, draft it, and revise it so quickly. I’ve noticed a rapid improvement in my writing while revising my debut novel. I thought my passion project was already at a high skill level, and to some degree, it is. The people I’ve shared it with—readers and people formerly in the industry—have given me very…

At the beginning of time, existed only the Colosseum. On copper shelves, glowed suns, each with a beaded necklace of planets. In silver halls, black holes twirled like tops powered by the most balanced of fingers. Comets trailed along the crystal walls with tails of icy fire. And the floors were constructed from obsidian’s night. At its center lived the Cosmic Mother. The pipes of causality became her hair, and the foundation of reality rested on her golden limbs. In her chest sat a panel of levers, gears, and dials that controlled the fundamental rules of the universe. She sat…

There was once a mountain, unknown to man but cherished by time. At its heart was a cave, and all around stretched a vast desert. One day, the moon devoured the sun. Beneath the eclipse, two beings were born. Within the cave, appeared an angel. He had wings, but no sky. He had light but no dawn. Within the desert rose a demon. It had a million faces but no head. It had function without form. The angel watched as the demon fled from the sun. It scoured the dunes, hiding in sandstone ruins, ever seeking shade. When night fell,…

I think I died last night. I sat in bed and closed my eyes, but when they opened, I was not home. I was in a humid jungle beneath a beating sun. I sat at a table carved from the heart of a redwood. Across from me was Life. She was radiant. She reached out a green hand and told me to ask whatever questions I desired. I spent the first eternity staring at the shimmering ivy on her cheeks. During the second, I watched rivers reshape her skin like mountains rising from oceans. When I finally found my tongue,…
